Poem:
Before I Forget
by Gian Lao
It’s almost cruel how the sky unfurls into a bluer sky, even in a world like this.
Though it isn’t cruelty, but forgetfulness.
We must respect those who were brave enough to fall in love during the war, knowing we were all walking away from each other on the verge of sinking into a history book.
What is love but a sort of amnesia?
The unending white wall of the mind and the painter on the dirt of the highway slumbering with his hands joined on the hill of his belly, a prayer to the God of rest?
We keep going because there is space.
The body knows it is meant to disappear.
That we are only ever afterglows of the people we love.
The faint heat. A piece of coal in the wind and the tug of gravity.
A lover mastering the distance, perfecting the way they imagine even a person they just saw.
